The Golden rule in Tokyo

When you are new to Japan, there might be lots of things you will be surprised about Japanese behavior.
But the golden rule is, not to disturb others. THAT’S IT!

I am Japanese raised up by Japanese parents and grew up in Tokyo,
and this golden rule “don’t disturb others” had been taught everywhere.
From my parents, kindergarten teachers, elementary school teachers, and else,
I’ve heard a lot of times that they say “you can do whatever you want to, as long as you do not disturb others”.

The rules based on that golden rule are, for example,

To Walk the right side while walking
No smoking while walking
To Wait till ppl get off the train before you get in
No talking on the phone while you are in a train….. etc.

You can see that all these kind of (hidden) rules are basically from the idea “don’t disturb others”.

When you can’t judge if you are doing right or not, remember this golden rule and enjoy Tokyo! 🙂

Hanko vending machine? The easiest step to get your own Hanko!

Hanko, a stamp is a wooden stick with your name on it and it is a Japanese traditional way of showing your agreement.

It is used as a signature mainly for the official documents.

The most major way to make it is to go to hanko shop and ask the craft man to make it,
but rescently there is “stamp vending machine”, which looks easier and cheaper way.

It has different colors and sizes you can choose, and you can customize the style.

And, in 10 to 15 minuits, you have your own stamp with your name!

Many of the Donki branches have this vending machine!

One of them near us is this Nakameguro branch.

Why Japanese sleep on the floor?

Although most of Japanese people use bed to sleep,
it is still common to sleep on the floor for Japanese.
Why is it??

There is no exact answer, but these are what I think are true!

1. Tatami mat
2. Shoes matter
3. Space problem

1. Tatami mat

Tatami mat is the traditional Japanese floor made of rice grass,
Which is soft and cozy to sleep on.
It use to be a major type of floor in Japan and the size of the room is measured by the number of tatami mats.
For example 6 tatami mats are the most common single bed room size in Japan.

2. Shoes matter

It might be also because of tatami mat, Japanese traditionally take off their shoes when they get into the house.
Tatami mat is soft and easy to be damaged, they do not wear shoes on tatami.
Therefore, the floor is treated as clean enough to put Futon and sleep on.

3. Space problem

Because it can be folded into two or three and put away to the storage, Futon was a space-saving way of using small space.
The room can be used as a study or dining room during a daytime, and a bed room during a night time.

These are what I(Japanese) think are the understandable reason for why Japanese use floor to sleep on.

Easy steps to Enjoy Tatami

If you are living, or thinking about moving in to Tatami house,
you might be wondering how you should treat it.

Actually, it is quit easy.

Here are the 4 important points when you have tatami mat in your house.

1. Don’t put a carpet on it, to keep it dry.

2. When you use a vacuum, do it softly and follow the direction of tatami.

3. When you want to wipe it for cleaning, use a dry towel. Only a bit wet towel is fine but not too much.

4. On a sunny day, keep the windows open to make the room dry.

Overall, the most important point is to keep it dry, because the humidity is what a mold and a tick loves.

See? Now you know how easy it is to treat tatami, and the rest you should

do is just to enjoy it 🙂

The temperature in Tokyo/Japan is becoming higher and higher

TANABATA- About Orihime and Hikoboshi : )

How are you?
Hope you’re all fine as always : )!

It’s soon going to be July 7th… the TANABATA day : )

Tanabata is an event related to the STARS.
It is based on a story that only once a year, Hikoboshi and Orihime, the two lovers, would be allowed to meet each other at the shores of the heavenly river.
And that DAY they can meet each other is – July 7th.

Hikoboshi and Orihime were husband and wife.
They were so deeply in love with each other and started to NOT do their job/work.

That is a problem. Right?

So as a punishment, they were separated and only allowed to meet one once a year.

On the night of 7th July of every year, people write their wishes on colorful paper sheets and hang them on bamboo leaves.

That is how the TANABATA came a celebration in Japan !
(*Although there might be various theories.)

TSUYU- the rainy season in Japan.

It’s been really HOT these days.
The summer finally came to Japan!

Which means…
The TSUYU- rainy season has started too!

In Japan, the rainy season lasts from the beginning of June to mid-July.

We call the rainy season ‘tsuyu’, which literally means ‘plum rain’.
We call like this because it starts when plums are ripening.

When the TSUYU finished … the HOT HOT summer is going to come!
And will be the best season for swimming too : )!!! Can’t wait!

The rainy season might last for a little more,
But let’s enjoy the rainy TSUYU season too.

It’s not that I’m happy because I got a really good sweets,
but I’m really happy because I got the feeling of

her satisfaction to our service,
her full expectation to the new life in the new room/ new area,
and had her word of ‘Thank you’ to me, for the apartment we’ve found and the service she had.

Mother’s Day- Thank you always, mum!

Today is ‘Mother’s day’ in Japan.
It’s a date to how your respect and gratitude of your mother’s daily hard work.

‘Mother’s day’- which is becoming one of the world-common celebration day- came to Japan in the 1910’s, and became common in Japan in the 1950’s.

In 1947, the ‘Mother’s day’ was officially decided to be on the second Sunday of May in Japan.

We usually send gift to our mother- the most popular one is a red carnation.

But did you know that there are many more colors of carnation?
And they each has a meaning…
For example:
-Red: Love, love of mother
-Pink: Gratitude, thankful, warmth
-Purple: Elegance
-Blue: Eternity happiness, graceful

Hope this will help you in some way 🙂

National holiday : ‘GOLDEN WEEK’ in Japan.

It have been Golden week in Japan,
Are you having a good holiday?

We are going to have our golden week holiday from tomorrow- 3rd to the 5th of May.

Do you know what ‘Golden Week’ is?
It’s the week where we have many public holidays- that sometimes it becomes a whole week off.

For this year, these are the main three public holidays:

①3rd : Kenpo Kinenbi— Constitution Memorial Day
→The date the current Constitution of Japan came into effect.

②4th: Midori no hi—Greenery day
→It’s a ‘Greenery day’- the date we should thank to the nature and all the ‘green’ around you, and enrich your mind and heart.(*It stems from the Emperor Showa’s birthday on April 29. The name “Greenery Day” was chosen to commemorate the Emperor Showa, who had profound knowledge of biology and botany. And in 2007, Greenery Day was moved to May 4th.

③5th: Kodomo no hi—Children’s Day
It’s a day to celebrate children’s happiness and to respect their personalities. The day was originally called “Tango no Sekku”, or Boy’s Festival. It was celebrated in order to wish the healthy growth of the boys in the family.

④6th: Saturday

⑤7th: Sunday

Do you know what ‘ZABUTON’ is??

HELLO 

Do you know ZABUTON ?

It’s a cushion we use when we sit on the floor.

As you may know,
We Japanese used to sit on the floor, with a low table in the tatami living / dining room.

But if you sit directly on the floor…
That will hurt your legs, right?

So that is why we use ZABUTON- the cushion to sit on.

Also, it was one of the way to show our ‘OMOTENASHI’ too- when customers come to your house, we always took out the ZABUTON for them.

These days, the style of living changed to ‘Western-style’ and most of us use the table and a chair to sit and eat, and the room floor is flooring.

But it may be quite a good option to have a low table with ZABUTON, in a tatami room- you may feel the breeze of Japanese tradition.

The NOMIKAI rules in Japan.

The SAKURA is beginning to end the season,
And the new season is starting to come up in Tokyo.

All the trees will turn green from the white/pink SAKURA- which is also beautiful view.

Have to get ready for the picnic!

April is the beginning of the new period in Japan.
So many new comers start to join the company- like your school or your job.

What we do first to welcome them,
Is the welcome party— which means to go drink with your coworkers.

It is said that there are some ‘rules’ or ‘manners’ for the drinking scene in Japan.

For example…
-When you take your seat, you have to sit closer to the entrance (of the room) than your boss.
-When you make a toast and hit the glass to your boss, you cannot make your glass higher than your boss.

These may be quite OLD-STEREO typed rules,
And it is NOT that every single person in Japan follow these rules and you have to do it too,
But it is true that many of us follow / be aware of these.

Sakura Season in Tokyo :)

It became SAKURA – HANAMI season now in Tokyo!

Have you ever heard of it?

It’s a traditonal way to enjoy the SAKURA- cherry blossom.

I’ll intorduce my favourite HANAMI areas in Tokyo :)!

(1)YOYOGI Park
Nearest station : Harajuku / Shibuya / Yoyogi station
It’s a HUGE park in Harajuku aea!
Good point about this is about the AREA!
As you know, Harajuku aera have THOUSANDS of shops and cute sweets shops!
You can buy the foods / sweets here and enjoy it in the park ; )
And no fees to enter the park!

(2)SHINJUKU GYOEN Park
Nearest station: Shinjuku Gyoen Mae / Shinjuku station
The location is great, and the SAKURA in this park is REALLY beautiful.
The combination of traditional Sakura and the modern buildings in Shinjuku makes the view.
You need to buy a ticket to enter, but it must be worth paying it.

(3)Meguro river
It is a stream along the Meguro area.
Sakura bloomed along the Meguro river is one of the MUST thing you got to see when you come here in Tokyo.
There are many cafe and restaurants along the river too,
so you can enjoy the coffee with the Sakura too :)!

I’m planning to go HANAMI soon too.

Public Transportation in Tokyo

Hello : )

Have you used a public transportation in Tokyo?

Transportation in Tokyo is quite exact (well, I think),
and is really convenient- I even think you don’t need any cars in Tokyo.

Not only the train- but the buses are also quite exact and easy to use too!
(Actually I use the bus to come to my office too!)

If you just see the road map,
you might feel dizzy- it is too complicated on the paper.

There are so many stations in Tokyo.
And especially in the middle of Tokyo,
there are many stations that you can even walk to the next station.

Anyway.
Since you might feel complicated on the map,
there are two tools that I really recommend!

1)route search application
Of course you can use the google map too,
but these applications are really convenient- you can know how much it will cost, how long it takes, and even shows you several routes to go to the station.
Just search 乗り換え検索　online- I’m sure you can find one!

2)SUICA / PASMO
These are a prepaid e-money card, and you can use for both transportation fee and shopping!
You just have to charge the money at the station- and then no need to buy the ticket every time you get on the train/bus, or no need to take your wallet to buy some sweets at the convenience store.
